Nigeria to Deploy 5,000 AI-Enabled Cameras in Plateau State Security Push

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced plans to deploy an AI-enabled surveillance network of over 5,000 digital cameras in Plateau State as part of a major security intervention aimed at curbing rising violence in the region.
The announcement was made during the President’s visit to Jos on Thursday, April 2, 2026, following recent attacks in the Angwan Rukuba district of Jos North that reportedly left 29 people dead. The President said the initiative is designed to strengthen security operations and prevent future incidents, directing security agencies to intensify efforts to apprehend those responsible.
The surveillance project will be coordinated by the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, and will feature AI-integrated cameras deployed in phases, beginning in Jos before expanding across Plateau State. The system is expected to integrate with existing digital security infrastructure already deployed in states such as Lagos and Enugu, and will involve collaboration between the Plateau State Government, the Ministry of Defence, and the Nigerian Police Force.
President Tinubu reiterated his commitment to restoring peace in the region, stating that the recent violence “will not be repeated,” while instructing security chiefs to intensify investigations and operations.
As part of broader security measures, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Bernard Doro, has been directed to compile data on victims to ensure targeted government support and relief distribution.
Stakeholders have welcomed the intervention, with Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang expressing support for additional security measures, including the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards. Former Governor Jonah Jang also called for broader political and traditional consultations to address underlying causes of insecurity, while former Deputy Speaker Ahmed Idris Wase emphasized the need for stronger inter-agency coordination ahead of the farming season and upcoming elections.
