The Malawian government described the engagement as a strategic milestone in strengthening international cooperation and advancing the country’s transition toward a modern, interoperable, and inclusive digital payments ecosystem.

India and Malawi have held high-level discussions aimed at accelerating digital transformation and improving livelihoods through enhanced financial technology cooperation.

The engagement was led by Malawi’s Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Dr. Shadric Namalomba, who met in Lilongwe with the High Commissioner of India and a delegation from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and NPCI International Payments Limited.

The discussions focused on India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI), a globally recognized digital payments system designed to enable fast, secure, and real-time transactions through mobile applications, QR codes, and virtual payment addresses. The Indian delegation presented UPI as a scalable digital public infrastructure model capable of driving cashless payments and improving financial accessibility.

A live demonstration showcased UPI as a “payment highway” that can streamline everyday transactions, increase efficiency in retail payments, and expand access to formal financial services for individuals and businesses.

Dr. Namalomba emphasized that such digital innovations are key to building an inclusive economy that empowers citizens, strengthens businesses, and enhances public service delivery. He noted that adopting advanced digital payment systems can significantly support Malawi’s development goals.

The Malawian government described the engagement as a strategic milestone in strengthening international cooperation and advancing the country’s transition toward a modern, interoperable, and inclusive digital payments ecosystem.
