The expanded collaboration with Broadcom is expected to accelerate the development of this custom silicon to meet Meta’s growing AI ambitions, including the deployment of four new MTIA chip generations within the next two years to support ranking, recommendations, and generative AI workloads.

Meta  has announced an expanded strategic partnership with Broadcom  to co-develop multiple generations of its next-generation MTIA (Meta Training and Inference Accelerator) chips, custom silicon designed to power artificial intelligence across all of Meta’s apps and services.

The company explained that it follows a portfolio-based approach to AI silicon, selecting the most suitable accelerator for each workload to optimize performance and cost efficiency. MTIA, Meta’s purpose-built accelerator, is optimized for large-scale inference and recommendation systems. The expanded collaboration with Broadcom is expected to accelerate the development of this custom silicon to meet Meta’s growing AI ambitions, including the deployment of four new MTIA chip generations within the next two years to support ranking, recommendations, and generative AI workloads.

As part of the partnership, Broadcom will support Meta across chip design, advanced packaging, and networking to strengthen the computing infrastructure required for delivering real-time AI experiences to billions of users. The collaboration is built on Broadcom’s XPU platform, which enables the development of custom AI accelerators and supports optimization across multiple silicon generations. Broadcom’s advanced Ethernet technologies will also provide high-bandwidth connectivity across Meta’s rapidly expanding AI compute clusters.

The agreement includes a commitment exceeding 1 gigawatt, marking the first phase of a broader multi-gigawatt rollout aimed at scaling the hardware needed to support advanced AI systems. Both companies say the roadmap is designed to enable the development of infrastructure capable of powering “personal superintelligence” at global scale.

Broadcom CEO Hock Tan described the partnership as a continuation of a multi-generation collaboration focused on AI innovation and large-scale infrastructure development, highlighting Broadcom’s role in advancing AI networking and its custom accelerator technologies. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg also emphasized that the partnership will strengthen Meta’s ability to build efficient, high-performance AI systems across its global operations.

Meta said the expanded collaboration with Broadcom is central to its long-term AI infrastructure strategy, ensuring it has the custom computing foundation required to support future AI development at scale.

In a related leadership update, Broadcom CEO Hock Tan will transition off Meta’s Board of Directors and take on an advisory role, where he will continue to support Meta’s custom silicon roadmap and broader infrastructure strategy.

The company also included a standard forward-looking statement noting that the announcement reflects strategic plans that may be subject to change based on future developments and market conditions.
