Angola Launches Government Data Center and Cloud to Boost Digital Economy
The new Data Center will strengthen investor confidence, ensure secure data hosting in the national territory, reduce operating costs and expand access to digital public services.
The Minister of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication highlighted, during the inauguration ceremony of the Data Center and Cloud of the Government of Angola, that the project represents a decisive milestone in the country’s digital trajectory and a firm step towards the consolidation of an economy based on knowledge and innovation.
In his speech, the minister recognized the decisive role of the President of the Republic, João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, stressing that the strategic vision of the Head of State has been fundamental for the implementation of structuring initiatives with a direct impact on the modernization of the State and the improvement of public services.
The minister said that, in the current digital age, data is one of the most relevant assets of nations, and its management, protection and processing are essential factors for economic competitiveness, government transparency and safeguarding national sovereignty. In this context, he stressed that the Government’s Data Center and Cloud goes beyond a simple technological infrastructure, constituting an affirmation of Angola’s digital sovereignty and a commitment to building a robust, resilient and inclusive digital ecosystem. The project is part of a broader strategy for the development of the telecommunications and information technology sector, which includes initiatives such as the launch of the ANGOSAT-2 satellite, the expansion of the national fibre optic network, with more than 22,000 kilometres, and the entry into operation of the 2Africa international submarine cable, strengthening the country’s connectivity at a regional and global level.
According to the minister, these investments have made it possible to consolidate a solid technological base, boosting digital inclusion and creating opportunities for the business sector, with emphasis on startups and small and medium-sized companies.
The most recent indicators point to significant progress, with more than 85% of the population covered by broadband services, about 17.7 million subscribers and a mobile penetration rate of approximately 75%, placing Angola above the targets set at the regional level.
The new Data Center will strengthen investor confidence, ensure secure data hosting in the national territory, reduce operating costs and expand access to digital public services. The infrastructure will also contribute to strengthening cybersecurity, promoting technological innovation and positioning Angola as a digital hub in Southern Africa.
With a modern and scalable architecture, the system ensures high storage, processing and connectivity capacity, and is operated by qualified national staff, prepared to respond to the growing demands of the digital ecosystem.
The minister also highlighted the impact of infrastructure on the Media sector, namely in support of Digital Terrestrial Television and in the management of audiovisual content, reinforcing the operational capacity of public bodies.
With the inauguration of the Government’s Data Center and Cloud, Angola reinforces its strategic positioning in the field of digital technologies, consolidating the foundations for a more modern, inclusive and competitive economy, aligned with the challenges of the future.
