His leadership is expected to contribute to advancing collaborative approaches among member states as the ITU works to strengthen global digital connectivity and ensure equitable access to technology-driven opportunities.

Bosun Tijani has presided over his first plenary session as Chair of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)  Council, marking a key milestone in his new leadership role within the global telecommunications body.

The session reflects the beginning of his tenure overseeing one of the world’s most important institutions for digital cooperation, standard-setting, and global connectivity policy. The ITU Council plays a central role in guiding the organisation’s work, shaping decisions that influence digital development and access for billions of people worldwide.

In his remarks, Tijani emphasized the significance of the responsibility entrusted to him, noting the importance of stewardship built on trust, cooperation, and shared progress across member states.

“Today, as I presided over my 1st plenary as Chair of the International Telecommunication Union Council, I take on a responsibility to steward an institution and legacy built on trust, cooperation, and shared progress. For me, this moment is about leading discussions and shaping decisions that will impact the digital future of six billion people. The path forward is clear: To lead collectively, act with purpose, and build on the foundation laid by those before us ensuring the Union remains strong, relevant, and ready for what comes next.”

Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Federal Republic of Nigeria

Tijani’s chairmanship comes at a time when global discussions around digital inclusion, infrastructure expansion, and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence are increasingly shaping the priorities of international ICT governance.

His leadership is expected to contribute to advancing collaborative approaches among member states as the ITU works to strengthen global digital connectivity and ensure equitable access to technology-driven opportunities.
