Ethio Telecom Offers 250 Million Free Voice Minutes in Nationwide Mother’s Day Initiative
The initiative also highlights the growing importance of diaspora-linked remittances within Ethiopia’s expanding digital finance landscape, as telecom operators across Africa increasingly compete to position mobile money services at the center of consumer financial activity.
Ethio Telecom, Ethiopia’s state-owned telecommunications operator and one of Africa’s largest telecom providers by subscriber base, has launched a nationwide Mother’s Day customer engagement campaign combining free voice and SMS services with telebirr-linked remittance incentives.
The initiative, which will roll out on Sunday May 10, offers customers three free voice minutes and ten SMS messages during a dedicated one-hour window, representing a potential 250 million minutes of nationwide conversation.
Alongside the voice and messaging campaign, Ethio Telecom introduced a parallel telebirr remittance promotion running from May 9–11, providing an additional 11 percent e-money bonus on eligible international transfers received through the platform.
Customers receiving remittances above 46,000 Ethiopian Birr will also be entered into a digital lucky draw through the telebirr SuperApp, with prizes including family travel packages, smartphones, broadband subscriptions, laptops, traditional clothing, and additional e-money rewards.
The campaign reflects Ethio Telecom’s broader strategy of evolving beyond traditional telecom services toward an integrated digital ecosystem combining connectivity, mobile finance, digital payments, and platform-based consumer engagement.
The initiative also highlights the growing importance of diaspora-linked remittances within Ethiopia’s expanding digital finance landscape, as telecom operators across Africa increasingly compete to position mobile money services at the center of consumer financial activity.
Ethio Telecom recently reported continued subscriber growth, with its customer base surpassing 85 million users.
