Namibia Launches Women in Tech Initiative to Boost ICT Skills and Inclusion

The Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Hon. Emma Theofelus, has called on Namibia to accelerate its digital transformation, stressing that the country cannot afford to wait for perfect conditions before fully embracing technology and unlocking its digital economy.

She made the remarks during the Huawei ICT Congress Gala Dinner and the launch of the Women in Tech and 2026 National Talent Cultivation Project held in Windhoek. The initiative aims to strengthen ICT skills development, promote digital inclusion, and expand opportunities for young people, particularly women, in the technology sector.

Hon. Theofelus reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for innovation, noting that digital transformation is central to Namibia’s long-term economic growth strategy. She emphasized that while some communities still show resistance to the adoption of technology—especially in relation to digital infrastructure and online services—the country must continue progressing as communities gradually adapt to the evolving digital landscape.

During the event, the Minister also presented awards under Huawei’s recognition programme, celebrating contributions to digital innovation and ICT development across Namibia.

She further urged stronger collaboration between government and the private sector to accelerate the national digital transformation agenda. According to her, such partnerships are essential to equipping young Namibians with the skills needed to thrive in the future digital economy.

The event was attended by Khomas Region Governor Hon. Sam Nujoma, representatives from Huawei Sub-Saharan Africa, the Chinese Embassy in Namibia, and other key industry stakeholders.
