Kenya and UK Explore Stronger ICT Collaboration to Advance Digital Transformation

Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, Hon. William Kabogo Gitau, hosted British High Commissioner to Kenya, Matt Baugh, for a courtesy visit aimed at strengthening cooperation between Kenya and the United Kingdom in the ICT sector.

The meeting focused on reinforcing the long-standing partnership between the two countries while exploring new areas of collaboration in digital transformation, connectivity, infrastructure development, data protection, and the use of technology to drive economic growth.

During the discussions, Kabogo highlighted Kenya’s ongoing progress in implementing major digital transformation initiatives across the country. He noted that the government is continuing to expand broadband infrastructure towards its target of deploying 100,000 kilometres of fibre optic connectivity nationwide.

He also pointed to advancements in public sector digitisation, revealing that more than 23,000 government services have already been onboarded onto the eCitizen platform. In addition, the government is scaling digital skills development programmes aimed at empowering young people with opportunities in the digital economy.

At the grassroots level, the Cabinet Secretary said Kenya is operationalising a target of establishing 1,450 digital hubs across the country, with one hub planned for every ward. The initiative is intended to improve access to digital services, connectivity, and technology skills, particularly for youth and underserved communities.

Kabogo stated that the progress made in digital infrastructure and innovation continues to position Kenya as a leading digital innovation hub within the region.

He also welcomed the United Kingdom’s continued support for Kenya’s development agenda and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering strategic partnerships that can accelerate inclusive growth and support the country’s digital transformation ambitions.
