Kenya’s digital transformation agenda has received a major boost following a Ksh.15.3 billion commitment from the EU–Kenya Digital Partnership. The funding is aimed at strengthening digital infrastructure, improving connectivity, and accelerating innovation across key sectors of the economy.
The agreement follows high-level discussions between President William Ruto and senior European Union officials, during which both parties reaffirmed their commitment to deepening digital cooperation. The partnership also reflects growing economic integration, with Kenyan exports to the EU rising by more than 20% under the current Economic Partnership Agreement.
A significant portion of the broader EU support package includes €37 million allocated to the Blue Raman submarine cable project. The undersea cable system—linking Djibouti, Somalia, Kenya, and Tanzania—is expected to significantly enhance regional internet capacity, reduce bandwidth costs, and improve the speed and reliability of digital communication services across East Africa.
Submarine Cable Project Set to Strengthen Regional Connectivity
The Blue Raman submarine cable initiative stands out as a critical digital infrastructure investment, designed to expand Africa’s international bandwidth capacity. Once completed, the system will improve data transmission speeds and provide more stable internet connectivity for governments, businesses, and telecom operators.
The project is also expected to support the growth of cloud services, fintech platforms, and cross-border digital trade, positioning Kenya as a key digital gateway for the wider East African region.
KALRO Embraces Digital Innovation in Agricultural Research
The Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) is advancing its focus on digital agriculture through its upcoming Scientific Conference and Innovation Expo scheduled for June 2026. The event will highlight emerging technologies such as precision farming tools, data-driven agricultural systems, and smart innovation platforms designed to improve productivity.
By integrating digital solutions into agricultural research and extension services, KALRO aims to support more efficient food production systems and promote technology-driven decision-making among farmers and stakeholders.
