Nigeria Data Protection Commission Announces Meta-Supported Initiative for Data Protection Strengthening
As part of the agreement, Meta committed to supporting a two-year programme of public-facing data protection measures aligned with Nigeria’s Data Protection Act, 2023, as well as related regulatory frameworks and the Commission’s strategic roadmap for 2023–2027.
The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (Nigeria Data Protection Commission) has announced the launch of the Meta -Supported Initiatives for Data Protection (M-SIDP), a new programme aimed at strengthening data protection safeguards for individuals in Nigeria.
According to a press release dated June 8, 2026, the initiative was developed in connection with the Commission’s regulatory engagement involving Meta Platforms Inc., following investigations into the company’s data processing practices in Nigeria. The matter was previously concluded through a court-approved settlement reached in 2025.
As part of the agreement, Meta committed to supporting a two-year programme of public-facing data protection measures aligned with Nigeria’s Data Protection Act, 2023, as well as related regulatory frameworks and the Commission’s strategic roadmap for 2023–2027.
The M-SIDP programme is structured around key focus areas, including governance, research and development; strengthening safety and sustainability mechanisms within the digital ecosystem; capacity building for data protection officers and compliance organisations; and public awareness campaigns targeting data subjects, with particular attention to vulnerable groups.
The Commission emphasized that the settlement does not limit its statutory authority, stating that it will continue to regulate data processing activities in Nigeria in line with applicable laws. It also confirmed that it will provide periodic updates on the implementation of the programme and called on stakeholders to support efforts aimed at improving privacy protection and accountability in the digital ecosystem.
