Africa’s Delayed 6 GHz Rollout Underscores Widening Digital Infrastructure Gap in Global Wi-Fi Generation Shift

Across Africa, the transition to next-generation Wi-Fi is moving more slowly than in any other region, with the continent remaining heavily dependent on legacy wireless infrastructure. The latest analysis shows that the 6 GHz band—critical for enabling Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 performance gains—has effectively not taken hold across the region, registering a 0.0% share of total Wi-Fi usage in Q1 2026. This places Africa firmly at the trailing edge of global Wi-Fi modernization, largely due to delayed spectrum policy decisions and slower consumer and enterprise hardware upgrade cycles.
Africa still relies predominantly on the older 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands for indoor connectivity. While the 2.4 GHz band remains important, its dominance has been gradually eroding as 5 GHz becomes more widely used. By Q1 2026, 2.4 GHz accounted for 52.4% of usage across the continent, down significantly from 76.4% in Q1 2022. Over the same period, 5 GHz nearly doubled its share, rising to 47.6%, reflecting a gradual shift toward more efficient and less congested spectrum use even without next-generation upgrades.
Despite this gradual improvement in spectrum utilization, Africa’s adoption of modern Wi-Fi standards remains limited. Wi-Fi 4 still accounts for nearly half of all usage (48.8%), underscoring the persistence of older router deployments across homes and businesses. Wi-Fi 5 is growing steadily at 34.4%, and Wi-Fi 6 is also expanding but from a low base, reaching 16.8% in Q1 2026. By contrast, Wi‑Fi 7 is almost entirely absent, accounting for just 0.1% of samples across the region.
Within Africa, progress is uneven, with South Africa emerging as the only market showing any meaningful early adoption of advanced Wi-Fi features. Even there, 6 GHz usage is minimal at just 0.2%, highlighting how limited regulatory rollout and device penetration remain. Most other African markets continue to operate entirely on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, without access to the broader bandwidth and performance benefits that 6 GHz enables.
Overall, the region’s trajectory reflects a structural lag rather than a lack of demand. The absence of 6 GHz allocation across most countries, combined with affordability constraints and slower replacement of older customer-premises equipment, means Africa is still in the phase where Wi-Fi 4 and Wi-Fi 5 dominate. While global markets are beginning to experiment with Wi-Fi 7 and expand 6 GHz usage, Africa’s near-term evolution is likely to remain focused on incremental upgrades within existing spectrum bands rather than rapid adoption of next-generation wireless standards.
