Nigeria Unveils Plans for Nationwide Digital Addressing System to Boost Services and Security

The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy,  Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, has highlighted the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System as a key component of Nigeria’s broader digital transformation agenda. He noted that the initiative will stand alongside major national infrastructure and digital projects, including Project BRIDGE, a 90,000km fibre rollout programme, NUCAP, the Nigeria Data Exchange, and ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s artificial intelligence ecosystem.

Dr. Tijani made the remarks following a stakeholder workshop attended by the Postmaster General and CEO of the Nigerian Postal Service, Tola Odeyemi, as well as representatives from various security agencies. The session focused on exploring how the new postcode system can be applied practically to enhance security coordination and improve emergency response capabilities across the country.

According to him, the system will assign every location in Nigeria a unique, machine-readable, and geographically anchored digital address. Beyond improving traditional mail delivery, it is expected to strengthen emergency services, enhance national security operations, improve address verification processes, and support more efficient logistics, e-commerce, and public service delivery.

He added that the development of accurate digital addressing is a foundational step in building a modern digital economy where individuals, businesses, and locations can be reliably identified and connected within an integrated national system.

Dr. Tijani also confirmed that stakeholder engagements will continue in the coming months ahead of the official launch of the postcode system, which is expected in October, describing it as a milestone initiative with wide-ranging economic and societal impact.
