The initiative, developed in partnership with several organizations across the technology, mobility, and payments sectors, aims to address common challenges faced by students and parents, including long waits for transport, carrying cash, and concerns about students arriving safely at their destinations.

MTN Uganda  has launched the Cashless School Days initiative at Kololo Secondary School, introducing a digital transport solution designed to make students’ daily commutes safer, more convenient, and cash-free.

The initiative, developed in partnership with several organizations across the technology, mobility, and payments sectors, aims to address common challenges faced by students and parents, including long waits for transport, carrying cash, and concerns about students arriving safely at their destinations.

Powered by MTN Business, the solution uses wearable wristband technology that enables students to access school transport through a simple tap-and-go experience. Students can register using QR codes or USSD and activate transport passes based on their travel needs, whether daily, weekly, or monthly.

The payment system is integrated with MoMo Uganda, allowing parents to pay for transport digitally while giving them greater convenience and peace of mind. The cashless approach eliminates the need for students to carry money and simplifies transport management.

Speaking at the launch, Ibrahim Senyonga, General Manager of the Enterprise Business Unit at MTN Uganda, said the initiative addresses real challenges affecting families and students.

“We know the challenges students and parents face today — long waits for transport, carrying cash and uncertainty around safe arrivals. Through technology and partnership, we are creating a simpler, safer and smarter school journey. You are the generation that will shape Uganda’s digital future. What we are introducing today is not just a wristband; it is a smarter way to move, pay and stay connected. By being first, you are helping pioneer the future of school transport in Uganda

Ibrahim Senyonga, General Manager of the Enterprise Business Unit, MTN Uganda

He also encouraged students to embrace technology responsibly, describing the initiative as an opportunity to help shape Uganda’s digital future.

To demonstrate the technology in action, students participated in a live bus experience, traveling from Kololo Secondary School to Lugogo and back using the cashless transport system.

The launch brought together representatives from government, technology, mobility, and financial services sectors, highlighting the growing role of digital innovation in addressing everyday challenges. Partners supporting the initiative include MoMo Uganda, EBus Xpress Kiira Ltd, HelloBooth, and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation Secretariat of Uganda.

The Cashless School Days initiative reflects MTN Uganda’s broader efforts to drive digital transformation and financial inclusion by leveraging technology to improve everyday experiences for communities across the country.
