The project aims to accelerate broadband access and improve digital inclusion by extending fibre infrastructure to homes and businesses.

Yas Fiber  has signed a strategic partnership agreement with the Zanzibar Information and Communication Technology Infrastructure Agency (ZICTIA)  and the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar to expand fibre broadband infrastructure across the islands of Unguja and Pemba.

The partnership marks one of the largest long-term digital infrastructure investments in Zanzibar, with Yas Fiber committing approximately TZS 300 billion over the next 20 years to support the expansion of high-speed connectivity across the archipelago.

The project aims to accelerate broadband access and improve digital inclusion by extending fibre infrastructure to homes and businesses. According to the partners, the initiative is expected to connect up to 100,000 households within the first three years of implementation.

The investment is expected to support Zanzibar’s broader digital transformation agenda by improving internet access and enabling the delivery of digital services across multiple sectors. Enhanced connectivity is anticipated to contribute to economic growth, innovation and increased access to online services.

Government officials and stakeholders view the project as an important step toward strengthening the islands’ digital infrastructure and expanding access to e-government services, education platforms and healthcare technologies.

The deployment of fibre networks across Unguja and Pemba is also expected to create opportunities for businesses, entrepreneurs and technology startups by providing reliable high-speed internet services that support digital commerce and innovation.

Yas Fiber said the partnership reflects its long-term commitment to supporting connectivity and digital development in Tanzania. The company aims to build infrastructure that can support future demand for broadband services while enabling communities and businesses to participate more fully in the digital economy.

As demand for high-speed internet services continues to grow across East Africa, investments in fibre infrastructure are becoming increasingly important in supporting digital transformation, improving service delivery and expanding economic opportunities in underserved areas.

The Zanzibar fibre expansion project further strengthens Tanzania’s efforts to build modern digital infrastructure and improve access to reliable broadband services across the country.
