NDPC Backs Secure Rollout of Nigeria’s Digital Education Management System
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, acknowledged the significance of data protection and privacy during the event and expressed the Ministry's commitment to working closely with the NDPC to ensure compliance on the new platform and across the education sector.
The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has called for robust data protection measures in the country’s education sector following the launch of the Digitalised Nigeria Education Management Information System (DNEMIS). The Commission’s National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, made the call while participating as a panellist at the official launch of the platform, organised by the Federal Ministry of Education.
Speaking during a panel session titled, “Data-driven Education Planning and Management as Components of National Planning,” Dr. Olatunji commended the Ministry for introducing DNEMIS and stressed the importance of implementing strong technical and organisational safeguards to protect the personal data of students. He said the adoption of privacy-focused measures would be critical to ensuring trust and the secure use of education data.
Highlighting the importance of “Privacy by Design,” Dr. Olatunji recommended that the platform incorporate an appropriate privacy policy, encryption, transparency, data minimisation, and end-to-end security. He noted that these measures would help build users’ confidence while ensuring accurate and secure data management across Nigeria’s education sector. He also reaffirmed the Commission’s readiness to support the Ministry in aligning the initiative with global data protection best practices.

The panel also featured the Statistician-General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Bureau of Statistics, Prince Adeyemi Adeniran; the Director of Educational Planning, Research and Development at the Federal Ministry of Education, Mrs. Obianuju Anigbogu; UNICEF Nigeria’s Chief of Education, Vanessa Lee; and Matthew Verghis, representing the World Bank Country Director.
