Instagram Expands Teen Accounts with Stronger Built-In Safety Protections
The initiative is designed to create a safer environment for teenagers by limiting unwanted interactions, reducing exposure to inappropriate content and encouraging healthier digital habits.
Instagram has expanded its Teen Accounts experience with a new set of built-in safety features aimed at providing stronger protections for young users while giving parents greater oversight of their children’s online activity. The initiative is designed to create a safer environment for teenagers by limiting unwanted interactions, reducing exposure to inappropriate content and encouraging healthier digital habits.
Under the updated approach, teenagers will automatically be placed into Teen Accounts, with users under the age of 16 requiring parental permission to make safety settings less restrictive. Parents are also encouraged to set up supervision tools, enabling them to work alongside their teens in managing account settings and online safety.
Teen Accounts will include stricter default content controls, with content recommendations aligned to age-appropriate standards. Users under 18 will need parental approval to reduce content filtering levels, while parents can opt for an additional “Limited Content” setting to provide even stronger protections.
The platform will also make Teen Accounts private by default, meaning teenagers must approve new followers and only approved followers can view or interact with their content. Messaging restrictions will also be tightened, allowing teens to receive direct messages only from people they already follow or are connected with.
To reduce harmful interactions, Instagram will restrict tagging and mentions to people a teen follows while automatically enabling the platform’s strongest version of its Hidden Words feature to filter offensive language from comments and direct message requests. The changes are intended to curb online bullying and unwanted contact.
The platform is also introducing features to encourage healthier screen-time habits. Teenagers will receive daily reminders after 60 minutes of app use, while Sleep Mode will automatically activate between 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., muting notifications and sending automatic replies to direct messages during overnight hours.
Additional safeguards include automatically restricting teenagers from using Instagram Live and enabling nudity protection in direct messages by default. The feature blurs suspected nude images and provides warnings about the risks associated with sending or receiving such content, reinforcing the platform’s efforts to protect young users from inappropriate interactions.
Instagram said the enhanced Teen Accounts experience is intended to provide parents with greater peace of mind while ensuring teenagers benefit from stronger default protections as they engage with the platform.
