The partnership marks a significant step in the country's digital transformation efforts and aims to accelerate the rollout of the national digital identity system.

Safaricom Ethiopia Telecommunications PLC  has signed a joint venture agreement with the National ID Program of Ethiopia  and Africom Technologies PLC  to support the implementation of Ethiopia’s National Fayda Digital ID Registration Project under Lots 3 and 4. The partnership marks a significant step in the country’s digital transformation efforts and aims to accelerate the rollout of the national digital identity system.

Under the agreement, the partners will support the registration of citizens across the regions of Afar, Amhara, Tigray, Sidama, South West Ethiopia, Central Ethiopia and South Ethiopia. The initiative is expected to expand access to Ethiopia’s national digital identity programme, enabling more citizens to participate in the country’s growing digital ecosystem.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, Wim Vanhelleputte said the project would deliver significant national benefits by accelerating digital inclusion, improving access to essential public and private services, and strengthening the foundations of a modern digital economy. He added that the initiative reflects Safaricom Ethiopia’s commitment to supporting the country’s digital development agenda.

Beyond expanding access to digital identity services, the project is also expected to generate employment opportunities for thousands of Ethiopians during the nationwide registration process, contributing to both economic development and job creation.

Yodahe Zemichael said the Fayda Digital ID programme is a key component of Ethiopia’s Digital Ethiopia agenda, helping to promote financial inclusion, improve public service delivery, strengthen governance and create new opportunities for economic growth.

Safaricom Ethiopia said the partnership underscores its commitment to leveraging its nationwide network and technical expertise to support initiatives that improve digital inclusion and empower millions of Ethiopians. The company noted that the project aligns with Ethiopia’s vision of building a more connected, inclusive and digitally enabled economy.
