Kenya Connects Over 780 Schools Under Last-Mile Internet Project

Kenya’s drive to expand digital access in education is gaining momentum, with the ICT Authority  and its partners reviewing progress on the Last Mile Connectivity of Schools Project in Kajiado County.

The ICT Authority, working alongside the Ministry of Education,  the Ministry of ICT and the Digital Economy  and UNICEF Kenya , conducted a field mission to assess the implementation of the initiative, which is aimed at expanding internet connectivity to schools in underserved areas.

During the visit, the delegation toured Moipei Primary School and Kumpa Primary School, where learners are now accessing the internet through an innovative hub-and-client connectivity model. The approach is designed to extend reliable internet services to schools that previously lacked digital access, supporting the integration of technology into classroom learning.

According to the ICT Authority, the Last Mile Connectivity of Schools Project has already connected more than 780 schools across Kenya, significantly improving access to digital learning resources and creating new educational opportunities for students.

The project has been implemented with support from the European Commission and other development partners. Through the initiative, more than 430,000 learners across the country now have access to reliable internet connectivity, helping to enhance digital literacy and support modern teaching and learning practices.

The ICT Authority said the programme reflects a shared commitment among government and development partners to bridge Kenya’s digital divide by ensuring schools in remote and underserved communities have access to quality internet services. The initiative forms part of the country’s broader digital transformation agenda aimed at ensuring that no learner is left behind in the transition to a digitally enabled education system.
