Kenya Rolls Out Smart Classrooms to Accelerate Digital Learning in Nyandarua
The phased rollout is intended to ensure that all learners have equal access to digital learning opportunities.
Kenya has taken another step in its digital transformation agenda with the rollout of smartboards and teacher laptops to junior secondary schools in Nyandarua County under the Kenya Digital Economy Acceleration Project (KDEAP).
The initiative was launched at Ol’Kalou Junior School, where the Principal Secretary for the State Department of ICT and Digital Economy, John Kipchumba Tanui, said the programme underscores the government’s commitment to integrating technology into education and preparing learners for the digital economy.
Tanui was joined by the Principal Secretary for Basic Education, John Ololtuaa, alongside Jesse Maruti Kiveu, Chief Executive Officer of the ICT Authority, and Jackie Kiaraho, a board member of the Technopolis Development Authority, during the launch ceremony.
According to Tanui, the first phase of the project will equip 172 junior secondary schools across Nyandarua County with smartboards and teacher laptops, while the remaining schools in the county will be covered in the second phase. The phased rollout is intended to ensure that all learners have equal access to digital learning opportunities.
The government said the programme extends beyond the provision of digital devices. It aims to establish digitally enabled classrooms, strengthen digital infrastructure in schools, and provide teachers with modern instructional tools that enhance classroom learning.
The KDEAP initiative also seeks to equip learners with the digital skills, creativity and confidence required to thrive in an increasingly knowledge-driven global economy. By integrating technology into the education system, the government hopes to accelerate inclusive development while investing in the country’s future workforce.
Tanui said the project represents a long-term investment in Kenya’s human capital, adding that the government’s objective is to build a digitally empowered nation where every learner has the opportunity to participate in the country’s digital future, regardless of location.
