Kenya Urges ICT Directors to Drive Next Phase of Digital Transformation
Speaking during a leadership forum for ICT Directors from Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) at the Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (Kenya-AIST) in Konza Technopolis, Principal Secretary for ICT and Digital Economy John Kipchumba Tanui said ICT professionals remain central to improving public service delivery, enhancing government efficiency and supporting economic growth.
Kenya’s State Department of ICT and Digital Economy has called on ICT leaders across government to strengthen their role in driving the country’s digital transformation, emphasizing leadership, continuous skills development and effective communication as critical to accelerating public sector innovation.
Speaking during a leadership forum for ICT Directors from Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) at the Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (Kenya-AIST) in Konza Technopolis, Principal Secretary for ICT and Digital Economy John Kipchumba Tanui said ICT professionals remain central to improving public service delivery, enhancing government efficiency and supporting economic growth.
The forum brought together Principal Secretary for Broadcasting and Telecommunications Steve Isaboke, Principal Secretary for Public Service and Human Capital Development Dr. Jane Kere Imbunya, and Farida Karoney from the Executive Office of the President – Communication, alongside ICT directors from government institutions.
Addressing participants, Tanui outlined three priorities for ICT leadership across government. He urged ICT Directors to recognize their strategic role in implementing digital transformation initiatives, noting that the strengthened ICT leadership structure across ministries reflects the growing importance of technology in Kenya’s national development agenda.
He also encouraged government technology leaders to embrace continuous learning as emerging technologies reshape the digital landscape. According to Tanui, regular upskilling will be essential to support the implementation of Kenya’s Digital Superhighway initiative and the country’s broader digital economy ambitions.
In addition, the Principal Secretary stressed the importance of communicating the impact of ICT initiatives, urging directors to complement technical expertise with stronger engagement in policymaking, mentorship and public communication to demonstrate how technology is transforming government services.
Tanui concluded by thanking ICT Directors for their leadership and commitment, saying Kenya’s digital future will be shaped not only by technology but also by visionary public sector leaders capable of translating innovation into meaningful outcomes for citizens.
