Somalia Launchs National Startup Network to Boost Innovation and Entrepreneurship
The initiative was unveiled during the BIC Somali Innovation Forum in Mogadishu under the BIC Somali Project, which is funded by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
Somalia has launched a new national startup network aimed at strengthening the country’s innovation ecosystem by improving collaboration between entrepreneurs, business support organizations, and public institutions. The initiative was unveiled during the BIC Somali Innovation Forum in Mogadishu under the BIC Somali Project, which is funded by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
The newly established network is designed to connect startups with incubators, chambers of commerce, government agencies, and other key stakeholders, providing entrepreneurs with greater access to mentorship, business development services, funding opportunities, and collaborative partnerships. The initiative seeks to accelerate entrepreneurship, foster innovation, and support Somalia’s ongoing digital and economic transformation.
Since its inception, the BIC Somali Project has helped nurture the country’s emerging startup ecosystem through training and incubation programmes. Organizers revealed that more than 3,600 applications have been received across three programme cohorts. Around 500 entrepreneurs have completed foundational entrepreneurship training, while more than 200 startups have benefited from incubation support. The latest cohort provided assistance to 75 businesses.
The launch comes at a time when Somalia is seeking solutions to growing youth unemployment. Nearly 500,000 young people enter the labour market each year, yet the economy generates only about 80,000 new jobs annually. Officials believe that expanding support for startups and small businesses can play a critical role in creating employment opportunities, encouraging innovation, and driving private sector-led economic growth.
The government is also advancing efforts to strengthen the country’s innovation environment through the development of intellectual property legislation. The proposed framework is expected to provide stronger legal protection for innovators while making it easier for registered businesses to attract investment and access financing.
Officials have encouraged entrepreneurs to formally register their businesses, noting that formalization can improve credibility, safeguard intellectual property, and unlock opportunities for funding and long-term business growth.
Supported by international development partners and growing regional economic cooperation, the national startup network is expected to provide a stronger platform for innovation, entrepreneurship, job creation, and sustainable private sector development across Somalia.
