As part of the upgrade, the market has been equipped with public Wi-Fi, CCTV surveillance cameras and a public address system, aimed at enhancing connectivity, improving security and supporting more efficient communication within the market.

MTN Uganda  has completed the transformation of Mpanga Market in Fort Portal, introducing digital infrastructure and financial inclusion initiatives designed to improve the trading environment for merchants and shoppers.

The upgraded market was officially handed over to its leadership during a ceremony led by Joseph Bogera, MTN Uganda’s General Manager for Sales & Distribution. The event was officiated by Hon. Dr. Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi, Uganda’s Minister of Local Government, and attended by Fort Portal City leaders, traders and members of the local community.

As part of the upgrade, the market has been equipped with public Wi-Fi, CCTV surveillance cameras and a public address system, aimed at enhancing connectivity, improving security and supporting more efficient communication within the market.

In addition to the infrastructure improvements, MTN Uganda onboarded traders onto its MTN MoMo Merchant platform to promote digital payments. The company also provided 10 merchants with UGX 100,000 each in float to help facilitate the transition to cashless transactions.

The initiative forms part of MTN Uganda’s broader efforts to support digital inclusion and create more enabling environments for businesses through connectivity, digital financial services and community-focused investments.

Commenting on the project, MTN Uganda said the transformation goes beyond physical infrastructure, emphasizing that its goal is to create lasting opportunities for the traders and communities that rely on the market every day.
