Kenya Advances Korea Partnership to Boost AI, Research and Digital Infrastructure
The engagement underscores Kenya's strategy of leveraging international partnerships to accelerate its Digital Superhighway agenda, with a focus on building digital infrastructure, strengthening innovation ecosystems, and developing the institutional capacity needed to drive long-term digital economic growth.
Kenya is deepening its technology partnership with South Korea as the government advances plans to operationalize the Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (Kenya-AIST) while exploring new investments in artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure at Konza Technopolis.
The discussions took place during a meeting between the Principal Secretary for the State Department of ICT and Digital Economy, Eng. John Kipchumba Tanui, and Korea Exim Bank (KEXIM) Country Director, Byunghyun Hwang. The meeting reviewed progress on the establishment of Kenya-AIST, which is expected to strengthen the country’s research capacity, scientific talent, and technological capabilities as part of its transition to a knowledge-based economy.
The two sides also explored the next phase of collaboration at Konza Technopolis, focusing on the proposed Digital Media City (DMC) and AI data centre initiatives. These projects are expected to enhance Kenya’s digital infrastructure, support innovation, and position the country as a regional hub for emerging technologies.
The meeting further looked ahead to an upcoming visit by a South Korean delegation in August, which is expected to expand cooperation in ICT, cultural exchange, and policy development while identifying new opportunities for technology transfer and investment.
