Launched on Tuesday, the report reveals that MTN Uganda generated Shs34.9 trillion in shared value through its combined economic, social and environmental impact.

MTN Uganda  contributed Shs15.32 trillion to Uganda’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and paid Shs1.6 trillion in taxes between 2022 and 2024, according to its latest Sustainability Report, highlighting the telecom operator’s growing role in driving the country’s digital economy and sustainable development.

Launched on Tuesday, the report reveals that MTN Uganda generated Shs34.9 trillion in shared value through its combined economic, social and environmental impact. It outlines the company’s contributions to digital transformation, financial inclusion, environmental sustainability and community development.

The report is MTN Uganda’s first sustainability report prepared in accordance with the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) Sustainability Disclosure Standards, including IFRS S1 and IFRS S2, and was independently assured by Ernst & Young (EY) under the International Standard on Assurance Engagement (ISAE 3000).

According to the report, MTN Uganda had connected 24.2 million subscribers by the end of 2025 through continued investment in telecommunications infrastructure. The company expanded its 4G population coverage to 88.6% and deployed 27,037 kilometres of fibre optic infrastructure, improving access to high-speed internet for individuals, businesses and public institutions across Uganda.

The report also highlights the growth of Mobile Money Uganda Limited, MTN Uganda’s fintech subsidiary, which processed transactions worth Shs195.5 trillion during the reporting period while supporting 14.7 million active mobile money wallets. The platform continues to expand access to digital financial services, enabling millions of Ugandans to make payments, save, trade and participate in the digital economy.

As part of its long-term Ambition 2030 strategy, MTN Uganda said it is embedding sustainability into its business operations while working to build a more digitally inclusive future and address environmental and social priorities.

On climate action, the report notes that the operator reduced its Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 45% compared with its 2021 baseline, keeping the company on track to achieve its Net Zero emissions target by 2040.

Beyond its core business, MTN Uganda invested Shs5.1 billion through the MTN Foundation to support programmes in education, healthcare, digital inclusion and community development, reinforcing its commitment to creating long-term social impact.

The report concludes that MTN Uganda’s combined economic, social and environmental activities generated Shs34.9 trillion in shared value, demonstrating that its contribution extends beyond financial performance through investments in connectivity, digital financial services, sustainability, employment and community development. It positions the company as a key partner in supporting Uganda’s digital transformation and long-term economic growth.
