Through the AWS re/Start programme, more than 3,000 young Kenyans have been certified and placed in jobs since 2021, recording a 45% placement rate.

Kenya is strengthening its collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS)  to expand digital skills development and create more opportunities for Kenyan talent to compete in the global technology market.

Principal Secretary for ICT and Digital Economy John Kipchumba Tanui said he accompanied Cabinet Secretary for ICT and the Digital Economy William Kabogo Gitau during a visit to AWS in Nairobi, where government officials engaged with Robin Njiru, Public Sector Lead for Sub-Saharan Africa, and the AWS Nairobi team.

The discussions focused on how technology partnerships can support Kenya’s digital transformation, with skills development emerging as a key area of collaboration.

Through the AWS re/Start programme, more than 3,000 young Kenyans have been certified and placed in jobs since 2021, recording a 45% placement rate. AWS Academy is also operating in more than 20 tertiary institutions, while the company has committed to training more than 10,000 university and TVET students annually through its wider skills programmes.

Tanui said the programmes demonstrate how cloud and AI training can translate into employment opportunities, positioning Kenya not only as a market for global technology companies but also as a source of globally competitive digital talent.

The collaboration also builds on a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding between AWS and the Konza Technopolis Development Authority, which will combine AWS cloud and AI capabilities with Konza’s smart-city infrastructure.

The Kenyan government said the partnership supports its broader ambition to develop local digital talent, strengthen the country’s digital economy and enable Kenyan professionals to build and deliver technology solutions for global markets from within the country.
