Digital Payments Drive UAE SMEs’ Growth Plans, Mastercard Study Finds
The study, which tracks SME sentiment across Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa, found that UAE businesses are maintaining a strong focus on growth, innovation and digital transformation despite the economic pressures arising from recent regional conflict.
Small and medium-sized businesses across the UAE remain optimistic about their prospects, with 74% of business decision-makers expressing confidence in their outlook over the next 12 months, according to Mastercard ’s 2026 SME Confidence Index.
The study, which tracks SME sentiment across Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa, found that UAE businesses are maintaining a strong focus on growth, innovation and digital transformation despite the economic pressures arising from recent regional conflict.
While confidence stood at 96% before the latest regional developments, subsequent sentiment tracking showed a decline to 74% as businesses adjusted to immediate challenges. Despite this shift, 72% of respondents still expect their revenues to increase over the next year.
The survey also highlighted the growing importance of digital payments. Some 83% of business decision-makers said digital and online payments are important to helping their businesses grow faster and operate more efficiently. Card payments are currently accepted by 83% of businesses surveyed, while 72% accept mobile payments.
Businesses identified accepting digital payments across multiple channels and providing seamless payment experiences as key areas that could support future growth.
“Entrepreneurial businesses across the region continue to demonstrate resilience and adaptability in the face of macroeconomic challenges,” said Onur Kursun, Executive Vice President, Commercial and New Payment Flows, EEMEA, Mastercard.
Kursun said digital capabilities and financial access are helping businesses manage short-term pressures while creating new opportunities for sustainable growth and competitiveness.
The study found that 57% of UAE businesses have experienced a negative impact on revenue, while 37% expect recovery to take six months or longer. Nevertheless, 64% identified maintaining and growing their businesses as their top priority.
Access to finance also remains a key concern. Half of the SMEs surveyed said they are seeking credit to support growth, while 37% identified easier access to funding and financial support as a priority. Identifying new revenue streams and receiving marketing and promotional support were each cited by 35% of respondents.
Mastercard said it is continuing to support UAE SMEs through initiatives including its Built Small. Moving Strong programme, partnerships and digital solutions designed to strengthen business competitiveness and accelerate digital transformation.
