Kenya Unveils SIBOH Virtual Home to Expand Digital Learning Opportunities

Principal Secretary for the State Department of ICT and Digital Economy, Eng. John Kipchumba Tanui, said the future of education must extend beyond traditional classrooms to create environments where knowledge, talent, technology and opportunity come together.

Kenya is advancing efforts to integrate digital technology, innovation and character development into education as the country accelerates its digital transformation agenda.

Principal Secretary for the State Department of ICT and Digital Economy, Eng. John Kipchumba Tanui, said the future of education must extend beyond traditional classrooms to create environments where knowledge, talent, technology and opportunity come together.

Tanui made the remarks during the official launch of the SIBOH Schools & Sports Academy virtual home in Uasin Gishu County, an initiative he said reflects the changing education landscape and the growing role of technology in expanding learning opportunities.

The launch was attended by First Lady Rachel Ruto and Principal Secretary for Basic Education John Ololtuaa.

Tanui highlighted the academy’s values of Servanthood, Integrity, Bravery, Optimism and Honour, describing them as important foundations for developing young people with both strong character and the skills needed to navigate a technology-driven economy.

He pointed to ongoing government efforts to expand digital access in schools, including extending connectivity, equipping more than 10,000 public Junior Secondary Schools with digital learning devices and smartboards, and strengthening foundational digital skills.

However, Tanui stressed that technology should serve as an enabler rather than the end goal of education.

He said learners must be equipped to use technology to think critically, create, innovate and solve problems, while gaining exposure to emerging fields including artificial intelligence, data science and cloud computing.

According to Tanui, the SIBOH virtual home demonstrates how digital platforms can extend learning beyond physical classrooms and create additional opportunities for students to discover and develop their talents.

He said Kenya’s education system must ultimately prepare young people not only to adapt to technological change but also to actively shape the future through a combination of digital skills, creativity, leadership, integrity and resilience.
