Mozambique’s Tmcel Begins Tests to Use Angola’s ANGOSAT-2 for Telecom Services
The tests mark another step in the implementation of memorandums of understanding signed by Angola and Mozambique in June 2026, on the sidelines of the 5th National Communications Conference held in Maputo.
Mozambique’s telecommunications operator Tmcel has begun tests to evaluate the use of Angola’s ANGOSAT-2 satellite for the provision of telecommunications services in Mozambique.
The tests mark another step in the implementation of memorandums of understanding signed by Angola and Mozambique in June 2026, on the sidelines of the 5th National Communications Conference held in Maputo.
Tmcel’s entry into the testing phase follows successful trials conducted by Televisão de Moçambique (TVM), which has also launched a Proof of Concept to transmit its television signal through ANGOSAT-2.
Following the results of the TVM tests, the broadcaster and the entities involved are preparing to move towards a commercial agreement. The proposed arrangement would enable the distribution of Mozambique’s public television signal across the country using the Angolan satellite.
The start of Tmcel’s tests further expands ANGOSAT-2’s presence in the regional market and highlights the potential of Angola’s space infrastructure to support telecommunications and broadcasting operators in other African countries.
The cooperation between Angola and Mozambique forms part of a broader regional expansion strategy for services associated with ANGOSAT-2. The initiative seeks to translate the satellite’s available space capacity into practical connectivity and communications solutions across countries in the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
