Gabon Puts Forward Its Candidacy for the ITU Council
Led by the Ministry of Digital Economy, Digitalisation and Innovation, this candidacy reflects Gabon’s determination to play a more active role in shaping global digital governance and the future of telecommunications and digital technologies.
Under the Very High Impetus of H.E. Brice Clotaire OLIGUI NGUEMA, President of the Republic and Head of State, the Republic of Gabon announces its candidacy for the Council of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), on the occasion of its participation in the World Telecommunication/ICT Policy Forum 2026 (WTPF-26) in Nassau, The Bahamas.
Led by the Ministry of Digital Economy, Digitalisation and Innovation, this candidacy reflects Gabon’s determination to play a more active role in shaping global digital governance and the future of telecommunications and digital technologies.
A Candidacy in the Service of the Gabonese People
The ITU Council plays a central role in shaping international policies and priorities in telecommunications and digital technologies. For Gabon, serving on the Council means having a stronger voice in decisions that directly affect its citizens: connectivity, digital infrastructure, access to digital services, skills, innovation and digital inclusion.
This ambition is rooted in Gabon’s ongoing digital transformation, including the development of fibre-optic connectivity, the construction of a Carrier Hotel, the strengthening of sovereign digital infrastructure through the Nkok Sovereign Tier III Datacenter, the digitalisation of public services, support for innovation and the development of emerging technologies.
Through its National Digitalisation and Innovation Strategy 2026–2030, Gabon is pursuing a long-term vision to make digital transformation a driver of sovereignty, economic growth and opportunities for all Gabonese citizens.
An African Voice at the Table
Gabon also seeks to contribute an African perspective to global discussions on connectivity, artificial intelligence, innovation, cybersecurity and the digital divide.

The election of ITU Council Members will take place during the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Doha in November 2026.
