Huawei Engages Malawi Regulator on Solutions to Expand Rural Connectivity

The engagement, shared by Joshua William Kamanga, Fixed Network Solutions and Product Manager at Huawei, focused on ICT solutions designed to make connectivity more affordable, scalable and accessible across Malawi.

Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA)  has engaged Huawei  on potential technology solutions aimed at addressing connectivity challenges and expanding digital access in underserved rural communities.

The engagement, shared by Joshua William Kamanga, Fixed Network Solutions and Product Manager at Huawei, focused on ICT solutions designed to make connectivity more affordable, scalable and accessible across Malawi.

Among the solutions presented was Huawei’s Rural Link, a compact telecommunications site that integrates key network components into a pole-based structure. The solution combines solar power, radio equipment, microwave and baseband technology, with the potential to reduce deployment costs in smaller communities where conventional network infrastructure may not be commercially viable.

The discussions also highlighted the role of affordable smartphones in expanding digital inclusion. Huawei noted that increasing network coverage alone may not be sufficient if consumers cannot afford devices needed to access internet services.

With internet penetration in Malawi remaining relatively low, the engagement identified opportunities for technology, collaboration and more efficient use of resources to help accelerate digital inclusion.

Huawei said it remains committed to working with the Malawian government, regulators, operators and other stakeholders to support the country’s digital transformation and extend the benefits of the digital economy to more communities.

The engagement comes as Malawi continues to face the challenge of bridging its digital divide, particularly in rural and underserved areas where the cost and commercial viability of traditional telecommunications infrastructure can limit network expansion.
