Kenya Expands Last-Mile Connectivity With Public Wi-Fi Rollout in Keiyo South

The free public Wi-Fi service is expected to benefit local traders, young people and micro, small and medium-sized enterprises by providing access to e-government services, e-commerce platforms and wider markets, while supporting digital entrepreneurship.

Kenya is advancing last-mile digital connectivity in Keiyo South through infrastructure development and the rollout of public Wi-Fi, as part of efforts to expand participation in the country’s digital economy.

Principal Secretary for ICT and Digital Economy John Kipchumba Tanui conducted a field tour of Keiyo South to assess ongoing digital infrastructure and connectivity projects. He was accompanied by Keiyo South MP Gideon Kimaiyo and officials from Konza Technopolis , the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC)  and the ICT Authority.

At Chepkorio, Tanui inspected the ongoing construction of the Chepkorio Centre of Excellence Digital Hub. The facility is being developed through a collaboration between the State Department for ICT and the Digital Economy, Konza Technopolis and the Communications Authority of Kenya.

The digital hub is expected to provide facilities for advanced ICT training, local software development and global remote work opportunities. The project is part of efforts to establish permanent digital infrastructure outside Kenya’s major urban centres and create greater access to technology-driven economic opportunities.

The delegation also visited the Nyaru Centre to inspect and test a newly installed public Wi-Fi hotspot. The deployment forms part of Kenya’s last-mile connectivity strategy and uses existing Kenya Power infrastructure to support the rollout of fibre optic cables.

According to Tanui, using existing infrastructure is expected to help reduce deployment costs and shorten the time required to extend high-speed internet connectivity to communities.

The free public Wi-Fi service is expected to benefit local traders, young people and micro, small and medium-sized enterprises by providing access to e-government services, e-commerce platforms and wider markets, while supporting digital entrepreneurship.

Tanui said the projects demonstrate the government’s approach to translating Kenya’s Digital Superhighway blueprint into infrastructure and connectivity at the community level, with the aim of expanding digital participation among young people and businesses across the country.
