The programme was launched by Kenya’s Deputy President, Prof. Kithure Kindiki, as part of efforts to strengthen the use of technology in education. The second phase is expected to begin soon and will extend the programme to the remaining public Junior Schools.

Kenya is advancing the integration of digital technology into public schools through its Digital Smartboards Programme, with the first phase reaching more than 10,000 Junior Schools across the country.

According to Eng. John Kipchumba Tanui, Principal Secretary for Kenya’s State Department of ICT and Digital Economy, the first phase of the programme has reached 10,384 public Junior Schools and trained 62,364 teachers across all 47 counties.

The programme was launched by Kenya’s Deputy President, Prof. Kithure Kindiki, as part of efforts to strengthen the use of technology in education. The second phase is expected to begin soon and will extend the programme to the remaining public Junior Schools.

The initiative is being implemented by the ICT Authority in partnership with Kenya’s Ministry of Education, the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

The programme provides schools with smartboards and laptops, alongside digitised curriculum content and teacher training. The technology is intended to support more interactive learning while improving teachers’ access to digital educational resources.

Tanui said the smartboards are designed to give learners greater exposure to digital opportunities, including creativity, innovation, digital skills and artificial intelligence, while helping prepare them for future employment in an increasingly digital economy.
