The NPKI will enable Zambia to issue and verify digital certificates, allowing citizens, businesses and government institutions to securely establish and authenticate their identities online.

Zambia has established a national digital trust infrastructure designed to support secure digital identity, electronic signatures and trusted online transactions as the country expands its digital government services.

The National Public Key Infrastructure (NPKI) was formally established during a production key ceremony held by the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA)  on September 7, 2026.

National Coordinator of the e-Government Division at SMART Zambia Institute, Percy Chinyama, said the NPKI represents the foundation for Zambia’s digital identity ecosystem, but stressed that adoption, skills development and adequate resources will be essential for the infrastructure to deliver its intended benefits.

The NPKI will enable Zambia to issue and verify digital certificates, allowing citizens, businesses and government institutions to securely establish and authenticate their identities online. The infrastructure is expected to strengthen trust in digital transactions and government services.

ZICTA Director General Eng. Collins Mbulo said the initiative would create an environment where citizens, businesses and government institutions can confidently conduct transactions and deliver services digitally.

The national trust infrastructure was designed and deployed by Altron Security, which secured the project through a public tender, in partnership with the Zambian Government.

The NPKI is expected to support a range of digital government services, including online document signing, licence applications, digital record management and secure access to government platforms. Its implementation is intended to strengthen the security and reliability of Zambia’s growing digital public service ecosystem.
