MTN Uganda Launches Mobile Money Toll Payments on Kampala-Entebbe Expressway
The initiative is aimed at making toll payments more convenient as traffic volumes on the expressway continue to increase.
MTN Uganda has launched Mobile Money toll payments on the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway, allowing motorists to pay toll fees directly from their mobile phones.
The service, launched in partnership with Uganda’s Ministry of Works and Transport and the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway, is now available at the Busega, Kajjansi and Mpala Toll Plazas.
The initiative is aimed at making toll payments more convenient as traffic volumes on the expressway continue to increase. Speaking at the launch, Eng. Dr. Timothy Tibesigwa, Acting Engineer-in-Chief, described the service as a milestone in improving the road-user experience and modernising toll collection.
MTN Uganda Chief Product Officer Jemima Kariuki-Njuguna said the initiative demonstrates how technology can make everyday transactions faster and more convenient, noting that Mobile Money is already widely used by Ugandans for payments, savings and other transactions.
Under the new system, motorists using designated Lanes 4 and 5 provide their mobile number to the toll attendant and receive a payment prompt on their phone. They then enter their Mobile Money PIN, with the vehicle allowed to proceed once payment is confirmed.
The launch brings together public and private sector partners to introduce a digital payment option for motorists using the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway, replacing the need for cash payment at the designated lanes.
