MACRA and Blantyre City Assembly Explore AI-Powered Smart City Surveillance

The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA)  has engaged the Blantyre City Assembly on a proposed Smart City Surveillance Initiative aimed at using technology and communications infrastructure to improve security and urban management in the city.

MACRA Director General Dr Mayamiko Nkoloma said the proposed project will involve the installation of AI-powered smart cameras capable of detecting and identifying objects, interpreting incidents and providing real-time surveillance support.

According to Nkoloma, the technology is expected to help reduce theft and other criminal activities in Blantyre. The initiative will involve collaboration with the Malawi Police Service and the Road Traffic Directorate to strengthen crime prevention and response.

Nkoloma said recent security incidents in Blantyre had highlighted the need for technology-driven approaches to urban safety.

Blantyre City Assembly Chief Executive Officer Costly Chanza welcomed the proposed initiative, saying it aligns with the city’s 2024 Blueprint, which prioritises improved security and modernised urban services.

Blantyre City Mayor Isaac Jomo also expressed support for the project, referencing lessons from a recent study tour to Tel Aviv, Israel, where he observed the use of smart city systems. He said the experience demonstrated how such technologies could support urban management and expressed confidence in the possibility of implementing a similar approach in Malawi.

The engagement also included a donation of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) by MACRA to Blantyre City Assembly workers through its Universal Service Fund. The donation recognises the role of council employees in maintaining cleanliness and safety across the city.

MACRA Board Director Mary Mpanga and officials from both MACRA and the Blantyre City Assembly attended the meeting.
