Angola Cables Upgrades Transatlantic Network with Ciena to Support AI and Cloud Growth

September 30, 2026

Author: Joyce Onyeagoro

Ciena’s optical innovations power 800 Gb/s services across key transatlantic routes spanning 12,780 kilometers connecting the United States, Brazil, and Angola

Angola Cables , a multinational telecommunications and digital solutions provider, is leveraging Ciena ’s high-capacity optical technology to bolster its transatlantic network for hyperscale, cloud, and AI-driven traffic across the MONET and South Atlantic Cable System (SACS) submarine cable systems.

MONET spans 10,556 km between the United States and Brazil, while SACS bridges Brazil to Angola as the first South Atlantic crossing with 6,165 km. By combining these systems, data can travel directly between Angola and the United States in 130 milliseconds round trip delay (RTD). Ciena’s technology will enable Angola Cables to support surging bandwidth demands driven by data-intensive AI models and cloud services. The solutions will also help Angola Cables simplify network operations through innovative software control and management capabilities.

“Our submarine cable systems are a critical digital bridge connecting Africa with the Americas, offering a diverse and secure route between these continents, while demand from hyperscalers and cloud providers continues to accelerate. Together with Ciena, we will enhance the scale, flexibility, and intelligence of our subsea infrastructure to help customers build and expand AI-ready networks while maximizing the performance of our existing fiber assets.”

– Adriano Caldevilla, CTO, Angola Cables

Angola Cables will deploy Ciena’s Waveserver  powered by WaveLogic 6 Extreme  (WL6e), 6500  Packet-Optical platform, and Navigator Network Control Suite  to increase the capacity and performance of its existing subsea network while creating more flexible route options for hyperscale, cloud, wholesale, content, and enterprise customers. The deployment will help Angola Cables deliver high-capacity connectivity across key routes linking the United States, Brazil and Africa, including 800G client interfaces on MONET.

“Demand for AI, cloud services, and digital applications is accelerating the need for higher-capacity, more intelligent networks. Ciena’s coherent optical and software solutions lay the foundation for AI-ready connectivity across the Atlantic, enabling Angola Cables to support hyperscalers and cloud providers with scalable, high-performance connectivity.”

– Fernando Capella, Regional Director for CALA South, Ciena

This network upgrade will give Angola Cables the ability to offer customers diverse, high-capacity and resilient routes. The deployment builds on Angola Cables’ previous use of Ciena technology  across its subsea network. Ciena’s solution further enhances the network’s flexibility and scalability allowing capacities ranging from a single 100 Gbps to a full fiber pair, catering to a wide range of connectivity needs, including spectrum and MOFN  (Managed Optical Fiber Networks).
