Tijani said his office will work with the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), government agencies, businesses and the technology community to embed the postcode system into existing products and services.

Nigeria has begun efforts to integrate its new National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System into everyday digital services, with the government calling on businesses, developers and innovators to build applications around the system.

Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, said the launch of the national postcode system is only the first step, with its broader impact expected to come from integrating postcodes into commerce, service delivery and other aspects of daily life.

Tijani said his office will work with the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), government agencies, businesses and the technology community to embed the postcode system into existing products and services.

The government has also made an API available to enable organisations to integrate the postcode system into their platforms. Organisations seeking access are required to create an account, submit Know Your Business (KYB) documentation and request the appropriate API access level.

Approved organisations will receive staging tokens for development and testing, followed where required by User Acceptance Testing with NIPOST’s technical and compliance teams before production access is granted.

The minister highlighted potential applications across commerce, transportation, healthcare, agriculture, emergency response and community services. He also called on developers and innovators to propose ways the alphanumeric postcode can support new products and services across these sectors.
