Morocco Unveils Open-Source AI Tools for Arabic Dialects and Speech Recognition

The tools are expected to support public administrations, startups, researchers, developers and businesses in developing AI applications that better reflect how Moroccan citizens communicate and interact with digital services.

Morocco’s Ministry of Digital Transition and Administration Reform  has announced new artificial intelligence (AI) tools developed through its partnership with Mistral AI,  with the first outputs to be released as open source.

The initiative forms part of the implementation of Maroc Digital 2030 and the country’s AI Made in Morocco roadmap, which seek to develop sovereign and responsible AI technologies adapted to Morocco’s linguistic and cultural context.

Two initial tools have been developed under the partnership. The first is a language identification classifier designed to recognise and distinguish between different Arabic dialects, including Moroccan Arabic. The second is Voxtral, an automatic speech recognition model adapted to the Moroccan dialect that can transcribe speech into text, including conversations that switch between Arabic, French and English.

The tools are expected to support public administrations, startups, researchers, developers and businesses in developing AI applications that better reflect how Moroccan citizens communicate and interact with digital services.

Potential applications include public services, education, media, customer support, document digitisation and multilingual data processing.

The initiative is being led by Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, Morocco’s Minister of Digital Transition and Administration Reform, as part of the country’s efforts to develop AI that is useful, sovereign and locally adapted.

By improving AI’s ability to understand Moroccan Arabic and, progressively, the country’s national languages, the programme is intended to support digital inclusion, enhance public services and strengthen Morocco’s capacity to make independent technological choices.

The new tools will also complement AI solutions being developed internally by the Ministry for its AI marketplace and to address the needs of public administrations and services. Additional models and use cases are currently under development through the partnership.
