Kenya Commissions Jitume ICT Hub in Uasin Gishu as Digital Network Reaches 391 Sites
The hub is part of the government’s wider digital agenda to improve access to technology and economic opportunities beyond major urban centres.
Kenya has commissioned a new Jitume ICT Hub at the Kenya School of TVET’s Moiben Campus in Uasin Gishu County, expanding access to digital skills training and online work opportunities for young people.
President William Ruto commissioned the facility, according to John Kipchumba Tanui, Principal Secretary in Kenya’s State Department for ICT and Digital Economy. The hub is part of the government’s wider digital agenda to improve access to technology and economic opportunities beyond major urban centres.
The Moiben facility brings the national network to 391 equipped digital hub sites, with a combined total of 23,387 devices. The programme has also supported the rollout of Virtual Desktop Infrastructure at 186 of Kenya’s 253 technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions.
More than 115,000 trainees and young people have participated in the programme, which aims to equip them with digital skills and connect them to opportunities such as remote work and online services. The hubs are intended to enable young people to access clients and employment opportunities internationally without having to relocate.
Tanui acknowledged the contributions of the Kenya School of TVET, Konza Technopolis, the Communications Authority of Kenya, the ICT Authority and the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) to the initiative.
However, implementation remains ongoing, with 67 TVET institutions still awaiting equipment. The government’s next steps will involve extending the programme to these institutions to widen access to digital infrastructure, training and online economic opportunities.
