Tanzania’s TCRA Gives Telecom Providers 30 Days to Fix Infrastructure Faults

The inspections identified several issues, including unsafe cable installations, damaged poles, cables left lying on the ground and infrastructure that lacked markings identifying its owners.

Tanzania’s Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA)  has directed telecommunications service providers to rectify faults identified in their communication infrastructure within 30 days, following inspections that uncovered safety and maintenance concerns.

The inspections identified several issues, including unsafe cable installations, damaged poles, cables left lying on the ground and infrastructure that lacked markings identifying its owners. TCRA said the measures are intended to improve public safety, protect property and ensure that communication infrastructure meets required standards.

The regulator has also asked some service providers to submit complete geographical information system (GIS) maps of their infrastructure, alongside details of corrective actions taken to address the faults. Providers have been instructed to submit photographic evidence and other information confirming completed repairs.

In addition, TCRA has directed service providers to obtain approval from the Authority before beginning new fibre-optic cable installations. It has also encouraged greater cooperation in sharing communication infrastructure to reduce cable congestion, eliminate obstructions and improve the use of existing resources.

According to the August 2026 inspection report, four of the nine service providers inspected were required to submit detailed information on the corrective measures they had implemented.

The measures form part of TCRA’s efforts to improve the safety and coordination of fibre-optic infrastructure installations across Tanzania, while supporting more efficient use of communication networks and protecting the public.
