The initiative aims to advance sustainable mobility and technological innovation in South Africa’s transport sector while creating new opportunities within the industry.

South Africa’s National Taxi Council (SANTACO),  alongside its affiliate, the South African Meter Taxi & E-Hailing Association (SAMTEA) , is preparing to launch a new fleet of electric-powered e-hailing vehicles in collaboration with BYD , Bolt  and Ctrack.

The initiative aims to advance sustainable mobility and technological innovation in South Africa’s transport sector while creating new opportunities within the industry.

The planned rollout brings together SANTACO and SAMTEA with electric vehicle manufacturer BYD, ride-hailing platform Bolt and vehicle tracking and fleet management provider Ctrack.

The introduction of electric-powered vehicles into the e-hailing sector represents a step towards expanding electric mobility options in South Africa. The initiative also highlights collaboration between transport associations and technology and mobility companies to explore new approaches to passenger transport.

SANTACO described the initiative as a milestone for the country’s mobility sector, highlighting its potential to support more sustainable transport and innovation. However, the council’s announcement did not specify the fleet size, launch date, participating cities or the operational details of the rollout.
