South Sudan Approves Telecom Tariff Adjustment to Sustain Services
According to the authority, the increased costs have been driven by higher global energy prices and domestic inflation, depreciation of the South Sudanese Pound that has limited access to foreign currency for infrastructure maintenance and equipment imports, and the need to keep pace with evolving global technology standards.
The National Communication Authority (NCA) of South Sudan has announced a phased adjustment of telecommunications tariffs aimed at safeguarding the sustainability of telecom services and preserving national connectivity across the country.
In a press statement dated June 25, 2026, the Director General of the NCA, Mr. Rizig Dominic Mabor, said the authority was taking measures to address growing challenges facing the telecommunications sector, particularly mobile network operators, which have experienced rising operational costs in recent months.
According to the authority, the increased costs have been driven by higher global energy prices and domestic inflation, depreciation of the South Sudanese Pound that has limited access to foreign currency for infrastructure maintenance and equipment imports, and the need to keep pace with evolving global technology standards.
The NCA stated that it faced the difficult task of balancing consumer protection with the sustainability of telecommunications services. The regulator warned that without timely intervention, operators could be forced to scale down operations, leading to service disruptions and reduced connectivity across the country.
The authority said it conducted extensive consultations with key stakeholders, including the Ministry of ICT and Postal Services, parliamentary committees on ICT, the NCA Management Board, mobile network operators, and civil society organizations. These consultations resulted in the adoption of a Council of Ministers resolution directing relevant institutions to implement measures to address the challenges affecting the telecommunications sector.
Following recommendations from its Board of Directors, the NCA approved a phased adjustment of telecommunications tariff exchange rates, which took effect on June 26, 2026, at 12:00 a.m. The regulator emphasized that the measure is intended to support the continued operation of telecom services while minimizing the impact on consumers.
The authority stressed that the action should be regarded as a “tariff exchange rate adjustment” rather than a tariff increase, noting that the underlying tariff rates have remained unchanged for the past ten years.
The NCA also noted that mobile network operators have been required to absorb much of the prevailing inflationary pressures in recent years. The approved adjustments, according to the regulator, are designed to ensure the sustainability of telecommunications services while protecting consumer interests.
The authority said it will closely monitor the implementation of the adjustment to ensure that the expected benefits are reflected in improved service quality and the continued reliability of telecommunications services.
In concluding the statement, the NCA thanked citizens for their understanding and resilience, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining essential digital connectivity and supporting the long-term stability of South Sudan’s telecommunications sector.
