MACRA and UNDP Discuss AI, Digital Identity and Skills Development in Malawi
During the meeting, the two organisations explored the use of Malawi's National Identity system to support SIM card verification, as well as opportunities to promote the responsible adoption of artificial intelligence and enhance data protection frameworks.
The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have held discussions on potential areas of collaboration to advance Malawi’s digital transformation agenda, with a focus on strengthening digital identity, artificial intelligence, data protection and digital skills development.
During the meeting, the two organisations explored the use of Malawi’s National Identity system to support SIM card verification, as well as opportunities to promote the responsible adoption of artificial intelligence and enhance data protection frameworks. The discussions also covered initiatives to expand digital skills among young people as part of broader efforts to build an inclusive digital economy.
MACRA and UNDP further examined opportunities to collaborate on programmes that would equip secondary school learners with digital skills, complementing existing initiatives being implemented through MACRA’s Universal Service Fund (USF). The proposed partnership aims to prepare young people with the digital competencies needed to participate in the country’s growing digital economy.
MACRA Director General Mayamiko Nkoloma highlighted the importance of strategic partnerships in promoting the secure, inclusive and responsible use of digital technologies. UNDP Digital Advisor Azhar Saeed Malik emphasised that successful digital transformation should be built on trust, strong data protection measures and inclusive access to digital opportunities.
According to the two organisations, the engagement reflects a shared commitment to fostering innovation, strengthening digital inclusion and accelerating Malawi’s digital transformation journey through collaborative initiatives.
