Guinea Launches NimbaPay National Instant Payment System
The initiative received strategic and technical support from the AfricaNenda Foundation, which worked alongside local stakeholders to develop a payment ecosystem built on interoperability and financial inclusion from the outset.
The Republic of Guinea has introduced NimbaPay, a national instant payment platform designed to modernise the country’s financial infrastructure and expand access to interoperable digital payment services.
The system, led by the Central Bank of the Republic of Guinea (BCRG) and implemented by Guinéenne de Monétique (GuiM), enables real-time payments across banks, electronic money providers and microfinance institutions. By allowing transactions between different financial service providers, NimbaPay is expected to make digital payments faster, more secure and more accessible for consumers and businesses alike.
The initiative received strategic and technical support from the AfricaNenda Foundation, which worked alongside local stakeholders to develop a payment ecosystem built on interoperability and financial inclusion from the outset. The platform is powered by Mojaloop, an open-source payment software widely used to support inclusive instant payment systems.
According to the Central Bank, NimbaPay represents a long-term national infrastructure that will support everyday financial transactions, strengthen the country’s digital economy and improve the efficiency of payment services for citizens, businesses and government institutions.
The new platform eliminates many of the barriers that have traditionally existed between different financial institutions, enabling users to transfer funds seamlessly regardless of where they hold their accounts. This interoperability is expected to improve convenience while lowering the cost of digital transactions.
Beyond facilitating instant payments, NimbaPay is also positioned as a foundation for future digital financial innovations. The platform is expected to support Guinea’s broader goals of increasing financial inclusion, promoting digital transformation and driving economic growth by extending secure digital financial services to more people across the country.
AfricaNenda described the launch as a significant milestone in Guinea’s financial sector development, noting that interoperable instant payment systems play a critical role in creating more connected and inclusive financial ecosystems across Africa.
GuiM has also encouraged financial institutions that have not yet joined the platform to connect to NimbaPay, highlighting its potential to broaden service offerings and strengthen collaboration across Guinea’s payments ecosystem.
