Botswana and Namibia to Sign ICT Cooperation Agreement
According to Botswana's Ministry of Communications and Innovation, the MoU builds on the strong bilateral relationship between the two countries, which have made significant progress in implementing existing areas of cooperation while continuing to identify new opportunities for collaboration.
The Governments of Botswana and Namibia are set to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the digital sector with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Kasane on 6 August 2026.
The agreement will be signed by Botswana’s Minister of Communications and Innovation, David Tshere, and Namibia’s Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Emma Theofelus, during a ceremony at Cresta Mowana.
According to Botswana’s Ministry of Communications and Innovation, the MoU builds on the strong bilateral relationship between the two countries, which have made significant progress in implementing existing areas of cooperation while continuing to identify new opportunities for collaboration. The partnership has also supported shared ICT initiatives and projects at both regional and international levels.
The ministry noted that Namibia was among the first countries in the region to significantly reduce roaming charges with Botswana, a move that has enhanced regional integration and facilitated cross-border trade. Namibia also plays a strategic role in providing Botswana with access to international undersea cable connectivity, supporting the country’s ambition to develop a knowledge-based economy.
Under the new agreement, Botswana and Namibia will expand cooperation to cover emerging areas of mutual interest, including digital transformation, new technologies and cybersecurity, reflecting the evolving priorities of the global ICT landscape.
The signing of the MoU is expected to further deepen collaboration between the two neighbouring countries as they work to advance digital connectivity, innovation and regional economic integration.
