Algeria Moves to Implement National AI Strategy With Inter-Ministerial Roadmap

Algeria has taken steps to implement its national artificial intelligence strategy following the first coordination meeting between representatives of several government ministries and national institutions.

The meeting, held on August 5, 2026, was chaired by Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Kamel Baddari and focused on establishing strategic priorities and a joint roadmap for expanding the use of artificial intelligence in public services while strengthening Algeria’s technological sovereignty.

A key priority is the development of sovereign, open-source government AI models that can support public-sector applications. The roadmap also calls for the provision of high-performance computing capabilities through computing centres, enabling research institutions and startups to develop and train AI models locally.

The plan places significant emphasis on developing national AI talent. Algeria intends to introduce intensive training programmes in partnership with universities and research institutions, with a focus on areas including data analytics and generative artificial intelligence.

The strategy also proposes the creation of a dedicated scientific research centre and specialised research units to strengthen AI research and facilitate the transition from academic research to industrial applications.

Another priority is the secure processing and storage of administrative and public-sector data within national data centres. The government also highlighted the importance of ensuring that AI technologies are deployed ethically and reliably.

The meeting concluded with the establishment of a joint monitoring committee tasked with overseeing implementation of the roadmap according to a defined timeline.

The initiative is aimed at translating Algeria’s national AI strategy into practical government applications and supporting the development of a modern, digitally enabled public administration.
