BII and Africa50 Strengthen Partnership to Scale Infrastructure Financing Across Africa

August 13, 2026
2 min read

The agreement was announced at the Infra for Africa Forum 2026 in Tanzania and will create a framework for cooperation on infrastructure financing and development, including co-financing, co-investment and capital mobilisation.

British International Investment (BII) , the UK’s development finance institution and impact investor, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Africa50  to strengthen collaboration and mobilise more investment into infrastructure projects across Africa.

The agreement was announced at the Infra for Africa Forum 2026 in Tanzania and will create a framework for cooperation on infrastructure financing and development, including co-financing, co-investment and capital mobilisation.

As part of the partnership, BII has committed $20 million to the Africa50 Infrastructure Acceleration Fund, managed by Africa Infrastructure Investment Partners, a subsidiary of Africa50. The fund targets infrastructure projects across sectors including energy, water and sanitation, transport and logistics, and digital and social infrastructure.

BII’s investment brings the fund to a fourth close of approximately $330 million, alongside commitments from the African Development Bank, International Finance Corporation and more than 20 African institutional investors.

“Africa’s infrastructure financing gap remains one of the biggest barriers to sustainable growth and development across the continent. Our partnership with Africa50 and investment in the Africa50 Infrastructure Acceleration Fund reflect our commitment to mobilising more capital into the infrastructure Africa needs to support businesses, create jobs and improve lives. By combining our expertise, networks and capital, we can help unlock greater investment into critical sectors while strengthening the pipeline of infrastructure opportunities that will drive long-term economic development.”

– Leslie Maasdorp, CEO, BII

“Africa’s infrastructure needs cannot be met by public capital alone. Delivering infrastructure at the speed and scale the continent requires depends on mobilising long-term private and institutional capital through strong partnerships. BII’s commitment to the Africa50 Infrastructure Acceleration Fund reflects our shared ambition to scale infrastructure investment, strengthen project delivery, and accelerate sustainable economic development across Africa. As Africa50 continues to expand its role in developing, investing and mobilising capital for transformative infrastructure, we look forward to partnering with BII in the next chapter of that journey.”

– Alain Ebobissé, CEO, Africa50

The partnership is intended to help expand the pipeline of bankable infrastructure projects and attract additional public and private capital to sectors critical to Africa’s economic growth and development.
