The engagement focused on the need to better protect Ghana’s fibre-optic infrastructure, particularly during road construction.

Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations,  Hon. Samuel Nartey George, has held discussions with Ericsson  on measures to strengthen the country’s digital infrastructure, improve network resilience and expand digital skills development.

The engagement focused on the need to better protect Ghana’s fibre-optic infrastructure, particularly during road construction. The Minister called for stronger coordination to reduce avoidable fibre cuts, noting that resources currently spent repairing damaged infrastructure could instead support connectivity expansion in underserved communities.

The discussions also explored Ghana’s ambition to become a leading technology hub in Africa and potential areas of collaboration with Ericsson under the government’s One Million Coders Programme. The partnership could help create pathways for programme beneficiaries to transition from digital skills training into sustainable careers in the technology sector.

Digital financial services and network resilience were also on the agenda. The Minister and Ericsson discussed strengthening telecommunications infrastructure to support cross-border payment systems, as well as exploring offline capabilities that could maintain access to essential digital services during network disruptions.

The Minister further discussed Ghana’s proposed advocacy at the upcoming International Telecommunication Union (ITU) conference in Doha, where the country is expected to push for stronger international protection of civilian telecommunications infrastructure. The focus will include critical connectivity infrastructure supporting essential services such as hospitals.

The engagement comes as Ericsson marks 30 years of operations and partnership in the region, highlighting its longstanding involvement in Ghana’s telecommunications and digital infrastructure development.
