TerraPay and Alipay+ Partner to Enable Cross-Border QR Payments for African Wallets

Under the initial phase of the partnership, 15 digital wallets across Africa connected to TerraPay’s Xend wallet interoperability network will be able to make payments at more than 150 million merchants within Alipay+’s global merchant ecosystem.

TerraPay,  a global money movement company, and Alipay+ , the unified wallet gateway of Ant International,  have announced a strategic partnership to enable seamless cross-border QR payments for digital wallet users across Latin America, the Middle East and Africa.

Under the initial phase of the partnership, 15 digital wallets across Africa connected to TerraPay’s Xend wallet interoperability network will be able to make payments at more than 150 million merchants within Alipay+’s global merchant ecosystem. The partnership also expands TerraPay’s cross-border payment capabilities beyond account-to-account transfers to include in-store payments globally.

Through Xend, participating wallet providers can allow users to make payments internationally using the same digital wallet they use at home. Travellers will be able to scan QR codes at participating merchants and complete transactions without switching applications or relying on cash, foreign exchange services or unfamiliar payment methods.

“The home wallet on your phone, that is from Kenya or Colombia or any country, should work the same way in Singapore or China or anywhere in the world, as easily as it does at home. That’s the promise of Xend. This partnership with Alipay+ is a major step toward making cross-border wallet payments as natural as paying locally.”

– Ambar Sur, Founder and CEO, TerraPay

The companies said the partnership responds to growing demand for digital wallets to remain useful beyond domestic markets. While wallet providers have established strong local ecosystems, their cross-border functionality has remained limited, creating challenges for users who want to use their preferred payment platforms while travelling.

TerraPay said Xend addresses this gap by connecting wallet providers to a global payment ecosystem through Alipay+ via a single integration. This enables wallet users to spend internationally without changing applications or carrying physical cards.

Alipay+ currently connects more than 50 international payment partners to over 150 million merchants across 220 destination markets, including through more than 10 national payment systems.

“By bringing TerraPay’s network of wallets to Alipay+, we’re helping more people and businesses connect across borders, creating new pathways for growth, and unlocking new opportunities. This reflects our joint commitment towards a more connected and inclusive global commerce ecosystem.”

– Edward Yue, General Manager of Alipay+ Global Power Center, Ant International

Ant International operates as a global digital payment, digitisation and financial technology provider, with Alipay+ serving as its unified wallet gateway for cross-border payments and digital services connecting merchants with consumers globally.
