The initiative, developed in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education, will provide zero-rated access to approved digital education platforms and learning resources.

Nigeria’s telecoms regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) , has launched a Zero-Rated Access to Educational Platforms Initiative aimed at reducing data-cost barriers to digital learning across the country.

The initiative, developed in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education, will provide zero-rated access to approved digital education platforms and learning resources. The move is intended to enable more students and other learners to access online educational content without the cost of data becoming a major barrier.

The launch brought together stakeholders from government, academia, the communications and education sectors, alongside student representatives. The gathering focused on strengthening collaboration between stakeholders to support broader access to digital education.

A panel session held during the launch examined the initiative’s vision, implementation and potential benefits. Discussions also considered how partnerships across the education and communications sectors could help ensure that zero-rated access delivers sustainable and meaningful impact for learners.

The NCC said the initiative represents another step in Nigeria’s efforts to make digital learning more inclusive and accessible, as the country continues to expand the use of technology in education.
